Tracii Kunkel Ph.D. specializes in Clinical Psychology. He completed his Ph.D. in 2012 from Northern Illinois University, where he conducted research out of the Center for the Study of Family Violence and Sexual Assault and sought out a wide range of clinical experiences. These experiences included multiple years as a Behavior Therapist for children and adults with autism and related diagnoses, assisting in the development and facilitation of a program for domestic violence perpetrators, and individual and family therapy with inner-city children and adolescents. Dr. Kunkel completed his clinical residency at the Missouri Health Sciences Consortium, where he trained in neuropsychological assessment, PTSD/trauma, and Serious Mental Illness at the Harry S Truman VA and Health Psychology at the University of Missouri Hospital.
After obtaining his Ph.D. Dr. Kunkel went immediately back into veteran care and relocated to Florida to assist in developing a program for veterans with PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, and other diagnoses similar to the one he had been part of in Missouri. He also became involved in the local community, becoming a regular speaker at both the Bethune Cookman University Community Mental Health Conference and the Orlando Mental Health Summit. His involvement in mental health recovery and fighting mental illness stigma has resulted in his appearance on Central Florida podcasts and radio shows. Dr. Kunkel cites one of his proudest accomplishments as founding the Guitar for Vets Port Orange/New Smyrna Beach program, followed closely behind by assisting in founding the Veteran Arts Coalition. Both organizations are dedicated to promoting music and art in mental illness recovery.
As a clinician, Dr. Kunkel sees his role as that of a coach. He strives to help his clients identify and overcome the obstacles between the life they have and the life they desire, built on values and purpose. He is well-versed in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, with a certification in Cognitive Processing Therapy and extensive training/experience in Acceptance Commitment Therapy. Dr. Kunkel also believes that mental health challenges often impact many areas of one’s life and that while CBT offers powerful tools, that might be only part of a holistic approach to strengthening all aspects of a person’s life. Regarding specific diagnoses, Dr. Kunkel has been recognized by his peers as an expert in Adult ADHD, PTSD/Trauma, and severe, persistent depression. Along with these, he has extensive experience with Bipolar Depression, Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety, intellectual disability/Autism Spectrum Disorders, and addiction.
