What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder causes extreme mood swings that include strong emotional highs and lows. Individuals experience depressive, manic and hypomanic episodes.
Clinical symptoms can include racing thoughts and speech, distractibility, decrease or increase need for sleep, insomnia, inflated self-esteem or grandiosity, mood disturbances, detachment from reality, and recurrent thoughts of death and or suicide. Mood disorders classified on the Bipolar spectrum include, Bipolar I Disorder, Bipolar II Disorder and Cyclothymia Disorder.
Bipolar disorders can be treated by a combination of psychotherapy and medication management.
