Pre-Surgical Evaluation

Some surgical procedures require a Psychiatric Surgical Evaluation where the surgeon or insurance company may require this evaluation prior to surgery.  The pre-surgical psychiatric evaluation is designed to determine if certain mental health risk factors or the stress of the surgical procedure could trigger undesirable behaviors.  However, the evaluation may lead to increasing the probability of an improved post-surgical outcome.

If the pre-surgical psychiatric evaluation reveals that mental health concerns could be a critical factor in the patient’s recovery, the surgeon may refer the patient to a psychiatrist or psychologist to treat an underlying condition treatment that may prevent or delay the patient’s surgery.

Surgical procedures that may require a pre-surgical psychiatric evaluation include:

  • Spinal surgery
  • Bariatric surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Transplant surgery
  • Amputation

Harmony United Psychiatric Care’s highly skilled psychiatrists and psychologists will perform these evaluations and if needed, they can provide a course of treatment to help prepare the patient for surgery.
